Guru Granth Sahib does not give life stories of its contributors as is believed by some. Rather it describes the cosmic principles which pervade the Universe and in it are enshrined the essentials of humanity.
The original Guru Granth Sahib is in Punjabi but now it is available in English, Hindi, Sindhi, Urdu and French. GGS does not narrate the life story of Guru Nanak, nor does it sing the glory of Guru Nanak, but it is dedicated entirely to the glory of Almighty God.
Guru Granth Sahib is a source book, an expression of man's aspirations, his longings, his yearnings for communication with the divine being.
Guru Granth Sahib was compiled by Guru Arjan Sahib, the fifth Guru of Sikhs and has 1430 pages in all. It is not the holy book of Sikh religion but it is the parliament of many religions as it contains the teachings of not only Sikh Gurus but those of various other saints born in different castes and creeds like Kabir Ji, Farid Ji, Namdev Ji, Ravidas Ji, etc.
This holy book is unique in certain respects. It urges the elimination of rituals and teaches man to approach God through His adoration. There is a great philosophy which purifies the worshipper and elevates his soul, although he may not be conscious of this process.
The language is simple and direct, with much of poetry. It is the peoples language, not an archaic language with an artificial sanctity. But it creates an atmosphere of sanctity and establishes a link between the composer and the singer. There is no other scripture in the world which takes the common man to the domain of truth in such a simple but compelling manner.
Guru Granth Sahib is certainly one of the worlds masterpieces of poetry. It has been rightly called the 'Cream of Indian thoughts'. The more you dig into the pages of GGS, the more you fall in love with them. In GGS, we find a wide range of mystical emotions of the personal realisation of God and rapturous hymns of divine love. It is an ocean full of pearls of divine thoughts. The more efficient and better trained a diver is the more he can fetch and better he can value the sea bed.
One who reads the divine book is undoubtedly stirred to the depth by the spirit which pervades the holy poetry. There is no human chord that is not struck, there is no depth which is not stirred. It imparts the sparks of life that kindles the extinguished one and makes whole, the broken one.
It is the scripture of all nations, for it is the lyric of divine love and all the people of the earth submit on such growing lyrical prayer that GGS is one song, one idea and one life.
The contents of Guru Granth Sahib are referred to as Gurbani!
Sweetness and humility are the essence of all vitues!
Meditate on Lord's Name and be ever in bloom.
God is within us but unrealised, for there is, screen of egotism in between.
Just as there is fragrance in the flower, And reflection in the mirror. Similarly God lives within. Search Him in the heart, O brother.
Fear not Frighten None.
Mool Mantar
There is only ONE GOD.
Truth is His Name.
He is the Creator.
Without Fear.
Without Hate.
Timeless and Without Form.
Beyond Birth and Death.
Self Illumined.
Known by Guru's Grace.
This Mool Mantar is a simple key prayer, composed by Guru Nanak. It sums up the basic concepts of The Sikh Religion.
